This past Saturday, after a pretty stressful morning, Juan invited me to Jerusalem Restaurant (he had been meaning to take me for four years now!). It’s a pretty well known arabic restaurant in Hato Rey (near San Juan). I had never tried arabic food before so I was super excited to try something new.
The restaurant was very nice, and the prices were decent enough considering it’s a higher end restaurant (not a franchise). You could definitely feel the whole arabian vibe as soon as you walked in, but it wasn’t over the top, which I like.
For the appetizer, we ordered Falafel (pictured above) with a sesame seeds sauce. The flavor was interesting, especially the sauce, since it’s a very strange flavor when you first taste it but it fades as you keep eating. I liked it, and Juan seemed to like it as well. So far, so good.
For my entrée, I ordered the Shesh Kabab Muschacal. This plate consisted of arabic rice, a tomato and cucumber salad and three types of meat: 3 pieces of chicken, 3 pieces of some type of ground beef and 3 pieces of beef. It was absolutely delicious! Add the fact that it was my first time trying that type of food, so I’m happy that I liked it so much. I would definitely return. The service was great and the food was delicious.
On Saturday Juan and I decided to go on a date and walk around in Old San Juan, a place I love but don’t visit as often as I would like. There’s a ferry terminal about 5 minutes away from my house where I can go to Old San Juan for $0.50 ($1 the round-trip). It’s better than driving there which would take me about 20-30 minutes and there’s not a lot of parking spaces in Old San Juan either. So to save time and money, I just leave my car at the terminal and take the ferry. You’re in Old San Juan in about 10 minutes or so.
As soon as we got there, we went to Café Cola’o, a little coffee shop that has won numerous awards. I ordered a Mocha that was delicious, probably the best coffee I’ve ever had. After that we walked around for a bit and went to CVS. My boyfriend spent about an hour browsing and comparing vitamins, and we both got our sets of vitamins. I used to take the One a Day brand for Women but the iron made me feel sick every time so I had to stop taking it. I found one that didn’t have iron and got fish oil as well. I’ve been eating healthy for the past few months so I’m trying to do everything I can to stay that way.
It had been a while since we took a picture so we found a sitting spot and started taking pictures. People must have been walking by thinking we were crazy or something, hehe. For lunch, we went to Pámpana’s Grill, a burger place. I didn’t even know about this place until I saw a coupon on the Groupon website and decided to get it and check it out. I ordered a Bacon Cheddar Burger and Juan ordered the Sweet Plantain Burger, both included bacon cheddar fries. The burgers were good but nothing extraordinary. For $10 (total, with coupon), it was more than great. But I probably wouldn’t pay full price for that burger. It’s always great to learn about new places though.
That was basically our date and I enjoyed every minute of it. Juan and I haven’t been spending much time together lately since we’re both so busy with university. So every opportunity we have to spend the day together is something I treasure.
