As 2019 began, my husband and I were striving for some change, and something that would make us feel better overall. We had researched changing our eating habits and adopting a new lifestyle that would benefit us physically and emotionally. That’s when we found information about the Ketogenic diet.
A Ketogenic (or Keto as most people call it) diet consists of high fat, moderate protein and low carbs. When adapting your body to this lifestyle, you burn fat instead of carbohydrates. There is a lot of information out there about the diet, but besides the greatest advantage of losing weight, a lot of people have reported improvement in their mental health as well. Several of our friends have been doing this lifestyle and have reported great results.
We decided to give this lifestyle a try and as of today, we have been doing it for 3 weeks. I can definitely say I’m feeling a lot better overall, and am starting to feel the changes in my body. Clothes are beginning to become looser, which is great.
There’s still so much we need to learn about Keto, but I think we’re on the right track. We’ve been playing around in the kitchen and trying out recipes that we’ve found on Pinterest or Instagram. In Puerto Rico, the Keto community is growing and we’re slowly getting Keto specific sections in supermarkets and stores. We’ve gotten most of our ingredients online but it’s nice to know that we may have a local place to shop at as backup.
When adopting this lifestyle, I realized of how many carbs I was eating every day, which was a lot. Most importantly, I became aware that carbs are everywhere. It’s definitely a process to get used to eating considerably less carbs every day. For me, the first week was very hard. I probably craved every carb-heavy dish I could imagine. It’s gotten a lot easier during the last two weeks. Trying out new recipes and having fun with our mails has definitely helped.
The hardest thing overall at first was coffee. Juan and I drink coffee twice a day, and we use milk with our coffee. Juan suggested I try almond milk with the coffee, and I immediately hated the after-taste. I thought my coffee drinking days would be over until we tried Unsweetened Flax Milk. It’s the closest thing in taste to milk that I’ve tried and I’m already used to the flavor.
I was very surprised when I learned that I could eat basically every type of cheese with this diet. As a cheese lover, this made me extremely happy. I’ve taken advantage of this fact and we find a way to implement cheese in most of our meals.
