E3 6/4: My Favorites

Posted by on June 4, 2012 • Filed Under Gaming

This year’s E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) began today with conferences by Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft and Sony. If you’re a gamer and want to know the big titles that are coming out, you should watch this conference. I’ve been watching Spike TV’s stream via Kotaku all day.

Today’s conferences weren’t amazing but the Ubisoft and Sony conferences were the ones that impressed me the most. Every year, more and more great games come out which isn’t ideal for me because there are so many games I want to buy but I have no money to buy them. However, there are a few titles that I definitely will try my best to get.

Microsoft showed gamers’ favorite franchises coming back, like Halo 4, Splinter Cell: Blacklist (with daylight!), Tomb Raider and others. The one that really interested me is Gears of War: Judgement, I’m a fan of the GoW franchise so I’m excited to play this game.

They showed great games like Dead Space 3, SimCity, Need for Speed Most Wanted and others. The games look awesome, especially Dead Space and Need for Speed.

They had the best game line-up. Far Cry 3 (I’m a sucker for great game landscapes), Avengers: Battle for Earth, Rayman Legends (for the Wii U) and others.

The games that had me drooling were Assassin’s Creed III and Watch Dogs.

Assassin’s Creed III

I’m a huge fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The first game was so-so, but the rest have been amazing and great fun. I was excited when I read that AC3 was being developed. The game is set during the American Revolution from 1753 to 1783, we say goodbye to Ezio Auditore da Firenze and welcome the new protagonist: Connor Kenway. It also adds the ability to navigate ships, which includes naval battles. The game’s release date is October 30, 2012.

The Watch_Dogs game footage blew my mind. It was absolutely amazing, and this is the game I want to play the most. The game is something else entirely creatively, but it does have a Heavy Rain meets GTA look. The game is set in a future where all technological devices are easily hackable. The protagonist can listen in on people’s phone conversations, control traffic lights, you name it. The game looks so realistic and complex, I’m almost sure that this game will be for next-generation consoles. If this sets the expectation for next-gen games, then I’m really, really excited to see what else game developers come up with. Would love to play this right now.
Update: Ubisoft confirmed that Watch_Dogs is an Xbox 360/PS3 and PC title. Really excited about this!

The Sony conference was the flashiest and best presented (as expected), there were a lot of games that interest me, but I can wait to play them. However, there are a few that I want to mention.

Beyond: Two Souls

This game is made by the creators of Heavy Rain: Quantic Dream. Ellen Page stars as lead character Jodie Holmes. It explores spirituality and the afterlife, punctuated by action, and very realistic looking faces and body language running in real time. It looks amazing.

Beyond: Two Souls
The Last of Us

Developed by Naughty Dog, the creators of the Uncharted games, it is a post-apocalyptic survival action-adventure game exclusively for the PS3. Abandoned cities reclaimed by nature, a population decimated by a modern plague. The survivors are killing each other for food, weapons, or whatever they can get their hands on. The characters are Joel, a male survivor, and Ellie, a young teenage girl. They work together in hopes to survive their journey across the US. I love that it features a Resident Evil styled menu (think PS RE games) and a health bar. This game is about survival, unlike most “survival” games that are more action-based and rarely feature any activity related to survival (scavenging, that sort of thing). Really excited to play this game.

Did you watch any of the E3 conferences today? Which conference and game was your favorite?

The Last of Us and Watch Dogs are the E3 winners no doubt about it. Beyond looks interesting from a graphical perspective and that's all I can really say about it. Let's see what happens at Nintendo tomorrow!
